Nelson had become an important part of the Oakland Athletics bullpen after joining the club in 1987. During the 1988 season, he appeared in 63 games, posted a 3.06 ERA and worked 91 innings as Oakland won 104 games and captured the American League championship.
The Athletics advanced to the 1988 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, beginning a stretch of three consecutive World Series appearances for Oakland. Nelson remained a valuable member of the pitching staff throughout that run, working primarily as a setup reliever alongside a bullpen anchored by closer Dennis Eckersley.
Nelson delivered the finest season of his career in 1989, going 9-6 with a 1.57 ERA in 65 appearances. He allowed only 55 hits over 92 innings as Oakland won another American League pennant and swept the San Francisco Giants to capture the World Series championship.
Nelson ultimately pitched 13 Major League seasons with the Yankees, Mariners, White Sox and Athletics, appearing in more than 600 games while working as both a starter and reliever. With its special Woolworth's Baseball Highlights origins and connection to Oaklands late-1980s championship era, the 1989 Topps Woolworth's Baseball Highlights #16 is an appealing addition for Athletics collectors, Gene Nelson fans, Topps oddball collectors, championship-themed collections or collectors assembling comprehensive autographed player runs.
