Gene Nelson Autographed 1989 Fleer #18 Oakland Athletics Card

Featuring Gene Nelson with the Oakland Athletics, this Gene Nelson autographed 1989 Fleer #18 Oakland Athletics card captures the right-handed reliever during the most successful period of his Major League career. The card was issued as Oakland was coming off a 104-win season and its first of three consecutive American League pennants.

Nelson joined the Athletics in 1987 after previous stops with the Yankees, Mariners and White Sox. He developed into a dependable bullpen arm for manager Tony La Russa, giving Oakland another experienced option on a pitching staff that also featured Dave Stewart, Bob Welch and closer Dennis Eckersley.

During the 1988 season, Nelson appeared in 63 games and posted a 3.06 ERA over 91 innings. His work helped Oakland dominate the American League, win 104 games and advance to the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Nelson was even better in 1989, producing the finest season of his career with a 9-6 record and outstanding 1.57 ERA in 65 appearances. He allowed only 55 hits in 92 innings as Oakland returned to the World Series and swept the San Francisco Giants to capture the championship. The Athletics won another pennant in 1990, giving Nelson three consecutive trips to the World Series.

Nelson ultimately pitched 13 Major League seasons and appeared in more than 600 games while working as both a starter and reliever. With its direct connection to his career-best season and Oaklands championship era, the 1989 Fleer #18 is an appealing addition for Athletics collectors, Gene Nelson fans, 1989 Fleer set collectors, World Series collections or collectors assembling comprehensive autographed player runs.
