The 1994 Triple Play #136 Chris Hammond features the left-handed pitcher with the Florida Marlins during the franchise's second Major League season. Personally autographed by Hammond, this colorful Donruss-produced issue represents one of the original Marlins' most successful starting pitchers and provides a different look from the premium products that dominated much of the mid-1990s hobby.
Introduced in 1992, Triple Play was designed as an affordable, collector-friendly baseball card line. The 1994 Triple Play set continued that approach with colorful graphics, player photography and a straightforward presentation intended to make baseball card collecting accessible to a broad audience. Today, cards from the brand provide a recognizable snapshot of the early 1990s hobby and are useful additions to comprehensive player collections.
Hammond's #136 is particularly appealing as an early Florida Marlins card. The franchise had played its first game only the previous season, and Hammond had been part of the organization before Opening Day after Florida selected him in the 1992 MLB Expansion Draft.
That selection proved productive for the expansion club. Hammond became one of the workhorses of the inaugural rotation, making 32 starts in 1993. He finished the season 15-12, establishing his Major League career high in victories and leading the first Florida Marlins team in wins.
Before joining Florida, Hammond had spent his professional career in the Cincinnati organization. The Reds selected him in the sixth round of the 1986 MLB Draft out of the University of Alabama, and the left-hander advanced through their minor league system before making his Major League debut on July 16, 1990.
Hammond's career later took an extraordinary turn. After spending the 1999 through 2001 seasons outside the Major Leagues, he returned with the Atlanta Braves in 2002 at age 36 and found new success working out of the bullpen.
The comeback was remarkable. Hammond appeared in 63 games for Atlanta, went 7-2 with a 0.95 ERA, and allowed only seven earned runs in 76 innings. His performance revived his career and helped him remain in the Major Leagues through 2006.
Hammond ultimately pitched parts of 14 Major League seasons for the Cincinnati Reds, Florida Marlins, Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics and San Diego Padres.
With its colorful Triple Play design, connection to the earliest years of the Marlins and Hammond's genuine autograph, this #136 is an appealing signed issue for collectors looking beyond the premium brands and building a truly comprehensive player or Florida team collection.
