The 1994 Leaf #284 Chris Hammond features the left-handed pitcher with the Florida Marlins during the franchise's second season of Major League Baseball. Personally autographed by Hammond, this premium Leaf issue captures one of the original Marlins' most successful starting pitchers shortly after his career-best season.

By 1994, Leaf had firmly established itself as one of Donruss' more upscale baseball card brands. The 1994 release continued that premium positioning with glossy card stock, strong photography and an elaborate foil-accented design. The distinctive presentation makes Hammond's #284 an attractive alternative to his more traditional flagship cards from the same season.

Hammond earned his place in early Marlins history after Florida selected him in the 1992 MLB Expansion Draft. The expansion club brought in the experienced left-hander from Cincinnati as it assembled the roster that would take the field for the franchise's inaugural season in 1993.

He rewarded Florida with the finest season of his career as a starting pitcher. Hammond took the ball for 32 starts in 1993, finishing with a 15-12 record. His 15 victories established a career high and led the inaugural Florida Marlins in wins.

Hammond's professional career had begun with the Cincinnati Reds, who selected him in the sixth round of the 1986 MLB Draft out of the University of Alabama. After stops throughout Cincinnati's minor league system, he reached the Majors on July 16, 1990, making seven starts during his rookie season.

Years after his success as a starter in Florida, Hammond authored an unlikely and memorable comeback. He was out of the Major Leagues from 1999 through 2001 before returning with the Atlanta Braves at age 36 in 2002, this time working as a relief pitcher.

The transformation produced an extraordinary season. Hammond appeared in 63 games for Atlanta and went 7-2 with a 0.95 ERA, surrendering only seven earned runs in 76 innings. His performance revived a career that appeared to be over and established him as a valuable veteran bullpen arm.

Hammond remained in the Majors through 2006 and ultimately pitched parts of 14 seasons for the Cincinnati Reds, Florida Marlins, Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics and San Diego Padres.

Combining the premium 1994 Leaf design, Hammond's significance to the inaugural Florida Marlins and his genuine autograph, this #284 offers collectors an attractive representation of both the early Marlins franchise and one of the more unusual career arcs of his generation.
