Hammond ultimately pitched parts of 14 Major League seasons, appearing for the Reds, Marlins, Red Sox, Braves, Yankees, Athletics and Padres. His career encompassed everything from an expansion-team workhorse starter to a dominant veteran reliever more than a decade later.
