His career would eventually become notable for an extraordinary reinvention. After spending the 1999 through 2001 seasons outside the Major Leagues, Hammond returned with the Atlanta Braves in 2002 at age 36 and emerged as one of baseball's most effective relief pitchers.

Hammond appeared in 63 games for Atlanta in 2002, compiling a 7-2 record and remarkable 0.95 ERA. Across 76 innings, he surrendered only seven earned runs, transforming a career that appeared to be finished into a successful second act.

That comeback kept Hammond in the Major Leagues through 2006. He ultimately pitched parts of 14 MLB seasons for the Cincinnati Reds, Florida Marlins, Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics and San Diego Padres.
