Nearly a decade later, Hammond authored one of the most impressive chapters of his career. After three seasons away from the Major Leagues, he returned with the Atlanta Braves in 2002 at age 36 and became a dominant relief pitcher. He went 7-2 with a 0.95 ERA in 63 appearances, surrendering just seven earned runs over 76 innings.

Hammond continued pitching through 2006 and ultimately appeared in parts of 14 Major League seasons for seven organizations, finding success as both a starter and reliever.
