Bill Lee Autographed 1971 Topps #58 Boston Red Sox Card

The 1971 Topps set is one of the most recognizable releases of the decade, famous for its distinctive black borders that provide a dramatic frame around the player photography. Lee's #58 comes very early in his Major League career, making it an appealing companion to his 1970 Topps #279 rookie card.

Lee had debuted with Boston in 1969 after being selected by the Red Sox in the 22nd round of the 1968 amateur draft. He spent his first several Major League seasons primarily working out of the bullpen before eventually developing into one of Boston's most dependable starting pitchers.

The season in which this card was issued proved to be Lee's first major breakthrough. In 1971, Lee appeared in 47 games for Boston and finished 9-2 with an excellent 2.74 ERA over 102 innings. He struck out 74 batters and recorded two saves while making only three starts, establishing himself as a valuable member of the Red Sox pitching staff.

Lee would eventually move into Boston's starting rotation and enjoy his greatest success from 1973 through 1975. He won 17 games in three consecutive seasons and earned an American League All-Star selection in 1973. His pitching success, unconventional personality and famous Spaceman nickname ultimately made him one of the most memorable Red Sox players of his generation.
