Griffin joined the Athletics for the 1985 season and immediately took over as the clubs regular shortstop. He appeared in 162 games and provided Oakland with durability, speed and steady defense in the middle of the infield. His first season with the Athletics began a three-year stint in Oakland before he moved on to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Griffin first established himself with Toronto, winning the 1979 American League Rookie of the Year Award, which he shared with Minnesotas John Castino. Known especially for his defense and speed, Griffin later earned a Gold Glove Award in 1985 during his first season with Oakland.

After joining Los Angeles, Griffin became part of the 1988 World Series champion Dodgers. He eventually returned to Toronto and added another championship when the Blue Jays captured the 1992 World Series, giving him championship rings with two different organizations.

Griffin played 18 Major League seasons, appearing in more than 1,900 games and collecting more than 1,600 hits.
