He allowed only 96 hits and struck out 112, becoming one of the most dominant relief pitchers in baseball.

His performance earned Hernandez both the 1984 American League Cy Young Award and American League Most Valuable Player Award, an exceptionally rare combination for a relief pitcher. He was also selected to the All-Star team and helped Detroit complete its historic season by capturing the 1984 World Series championship.

Hernandez remained one of the American Leagues top relievers in 1985, recording 31 saves with a 2.70 ERA in 74 appearances and earning his second consecutive All-Star selection. He would make the All-Star team again in 1986, giving him three straight selections as a member of the Tigers.
