Ruhle joined the Cleveland Indians in 1985 after spending the previous seven seasons with the Houston Astros. Used as both a starter and reliever during his career, he brought more than a decade of Major League experience to the Cleveland pitching staff.
His finest season came with Houston in 1980, when Ruhle went 12-4 with a 2.37 ERA and helped the Astros capture the first division championship in franchise history. Houston advanced to a memorable National League Championship Series against the Philadelphia Phillies, and Ruhle started Game 4 of the series.
Ruhle began his Major League career with the Detroit Tigers in 1974 and ultimately pitched 13 seasons for the Tigers, Astros, Indians and California Angels. He finished with 67 victories and a 3.73 career ERA before later building a lengthy career as a Major League pitching coach.
