Batista joined the expansion Diamondbacks after being selected from the Oakland Athletics in the 1997 MLB Expansion Draft. During Arizonas inaugural 1998 season, he established himself as an everyday player during the second half and appeared in 106 games, batting .273 with 80 hits, 16 doubles, 18 home runs and 41 RBI. Sixteen of those home runs came during a particularly impressive 48-game stretch from July 3 through September 13.

The 1998 season provided an early indication of the power Batista would display throughout his career. He went on to hit 31 home runs between Arizona and Toronto in 1999 before producing a career-high 41 home runs and 114 RBI for the Blue Jays in 2000.

Batista became a two-time MLB All-Star and finished his Major League career with 1,146 hits, 221 home runs and 718 RBI.
