A versatile player who appeared primarily at first base and in the outfield, Tolman provided valuable depth to his teams while establishing a reputation for his dedication to the game and understanding of baseball fundamentals.

Originally selected by the Houston Astros in the 12th round of the 1978 Major League Baseball Draft out of the University of Southern California, Tolman developed through Houston's minor league system before making his Major League debut in 1981.

Tolman spent the majority of his playing career with the Astros, contributing as a reserve player and pinch hitter during the early and mid-1980s. He was part of the Houston organization during an important period in franchise history, playing alongside established stars such as Nolan Ryan, Jose Cruz, and Joe Niekro.

Following his time with Houston, Tolman finished his Major League playing career with the Detroit Tigers in 1987. Although his Major League playing career was relatively brief, his contributions to professional baseball continued for decades.

After retiring as a player, Tolman developed an extensive career as a minor league manager and Major League coach. He served as the third base coach for the Washington Nationals and later worked on the coaching staff of the Cleveland Indians, where he was recognized for his baseball knowledge and commitment to player development.

The 1986 Topps #272 card features Tolman in his Houston Astros uniform during the latter portion of his Major League playing career.
