Texas selected Buechele in the fifth round of the 1982 MLB Draft out of Stanford University, and he reached the Major Leagues in 1985. He became the Rangers' primary third baseman the following season, combining dependable defense with right-handed power.

Buechele enjoyed a productive 1987 season, appearing in 151 games and hitting 13 home runs with 57 RBI. He developed into a fixture at third base for Texas and reached double figures in home runs in each of his first six full Major League seasons.

One of Buechele's best seasons came in 1991, when he hit 18 home runs and drove in 66 runs before being traded during the season to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He helped Pittsburgh capture the National League East championship and appeared in the NLCS against the Atlanta Braves.
