The right-hander remained a member of the Cubs rotation through 1989 and recorded double-digit victory totals in four different seasons with Chicago. His best season with the club came in 1985, when he went 8-4 with a 3.04 ERA despite being limited to 19 starts.

Sanderson later pitched for the Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, California Angels, San Francisco Giants and Chicago White Sox. He enjoyed one of his finest seasons with the Yankees in 1991, winning a career-high 16 games and earning his only American League All-Star selection.

Sanderson pitched 19 seasons in the Major Leagues, compiling 163 victories and 1,611 strikeouts while making more than 400 starts.
