A right-handed pitcher known for his control, durability, and ability to work effectively against opposing lineups, Sanderson established himself as a reliable starter across both leagues.

Sanderson began his Major League career with the Montreal Expos in 1978 after being selected by the organization in the third round of the 1977 MLB Draft. He quickly became an important part of Montreal's starting rotation, contributing to a talented pitching staff that helped establish the Expos as contenders in the National League East.

During the early 1980s, Sanderson pitched alongside notable Montreal teammates including Steve Rogers, Bill Gullickson, and Charlie Lea. He was a member of the 1981 Expos team that captured the National League East second-half title and advanced to the franchise's first National League Championship Series, where Montreal faced the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Following the 1983 season, Sanderson joined the Chicago Cubs and became part of another memorable division championship team. In 1984, he helped Chicago capture the National League East title and reach the postseason for the first time since 1945.

Sanderson continued his successful Major League career with several American League clubs. His finest individual season came in 1990 with the Oakland Athletics, when he compiled a 17-11 record, helping Oakland win the American League pennant and advance to the World Series.

In 1991, while pitching for the New York Yankees, Sanderson earned his only American League All-Star selection, recognizing his strong performance as a veteran starting pitcher.

Over his Major League career, Sanderson recorded 163 victories and more than 1,600 strikeouts, leaving a legacy as a respected pitcher who contributed to several successful organizations.
