Rusty Kuntz Autographed 1985 Fleer #14 Detroit Tigers Card
Kuntz enjoyed a career year after joining Detroit in 1984, appearing in 84 games and batting .286 with a .393 on-base percentage and .807 OPS. He collected 40 hits, including 12 doubles and two home runs, drove in 22 runs and scored 32 times while filling a valuable role in the Tigers outfield.
His most memorable contribution came in Game 5 of the 1984 World Series against the San Diego Padres. With the score tied 3-3 in the fifth inning, Kuntz lifted a sacrifice fly that brought home Kirk Gibson with the go-ahead run. Detroit never trailed again, eventually winning 8-4 to capture the World Series championship. Kuntz is officially credited with one RBI and one sacrifice fly during his two World Series appearances.
The championship proved to be the defining season of Kuntzs playing career. He spent parts of seven Major League seasons with the Chicago White Sox, Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers before concluding his playing career in 1985. His connection to the 1984 Tigers remained a significant part of his baseball legacy, and MLB recognizes him as a member of Detroits World Series championship team.
