Garner was a cornerstone of the 1979 World Series Champion Pittsburgh Pirates, helping the legendary "We Are Family" club capture the franchise's fifth World Series title. His outstanding all-around play earned him National League All-Star selections in 1978, 1980, and 1981, while his leadership and toughness made him one of the Pirates' most popular players.

Following his playing career, Garner enjoyed success as a Major League manager, leading the Houston Astros to the 2005 National League pennant, the first World Series appearance in franchise history.
