Featuring Ozzie Virgil during his tenure behind the plate in Philadelphia, this Ozzie Virgil autographed 1985 Topps #611 Philadelphia Phillies card captures the catcher just as he was emerging as one of the National Leagues top power-hitting players at his position.

Virgil joined the Philadelphia Phillies in 1982 and gradually took over the clubs catching duties. By 1984, he had become Philadelphias primary catcher, appearing in 125 games while hitting 14 home runs and driving in 58 runs.

His breakthrough came in 1985, when Virgil hit 19 home runs with 55 RBI and earned his first National League All-Star selection. His 19 home runs established a new Phillies single-season record for a catcher at the time, surpassing the previous mark held by longtime Philadelphia backstop Andy Seminick.

Virgil was traded to the Atlanta Braves following the 1985 season and continued his success in 1986. He appeared in 129 games, hit 15 home runs with 48 RBI and earned his second consecutive National League All-Star selection. He ultimately played parts of 11 Major League seasons with the Phillies, Braves and Toronto Blue Jays.

Baseball was already part of Virgils family history. His father, Ozzie Virgil Sr., became the first Dominican-born player to reach the Major Leagues when he debuted with the New York Giants in 1956. The 1985 Topps #611 represents an important period in the younger Virgils career and is an appealing addition for Phillies collectors, Ozzie Virgil fans, Topps set collectors or collectors assembling comprehensive autographed player runs.
