Add a mid-1980s Fleer Update issue of veteran pitcher Neil Allen with this Neil Allen autographed 1986 Fleer Update #U-3 Chicago White Sox card. The Update set allowed Fleer to feature players who changed teams or emerged during the season, and Allens #U-3 card documents his move to the Chicago White Sox during the 1986 campaign.
Allen began 1986 with the New York Yankees before being traded to Chicago in July. Working primarily as a starter for the White Sox, he made 12 starts in 13 appearances, posting a 3-4 record with a 3.82 ERA. The move continued a career in which Allen proved capable of contributing both as a starter and out of the bullpen.
Allen originally reached the Major Leagues with the New York Mets and quickly developed into their primary closer. He recorded 22 saves in 1980 and 18 more in 1981, then became part of one of the most memorable trades of the decade when the Mets sent Allen and Rick Ownbey to St. Louis for Keith Hernandez in June 1983.
Over an 11-season Major League career, Allen pitched for the Mets, Cardinals, Yankees, White Sox and Indians, appearing in 484 games with 75 wins and 84 saves. His versatility as both a starter and reliever makes him an interesting figure from the pitching staffs of the 1980s.
The 1986 Fleer Update #U-3 is an excellent addition for Chicago White Sox collectors, Neil Allen fans, Fleer Update set collectors or collectors assembling comprehensive autographed player runs.
