Williams made his Major League debut with Texas on April 9, 1986 and immediately became a heavily used member of the Rangers bullpen. As a rookie, he appeared in 80 games, posting an 8-6 record with eight saves and 96 strikeouts in 98 innings. His 80 appearances led the American League and demonstrated the durability that would become a hallmark of his early career.

After three seasons with Texas, Williams joined the Chicago Cubs and emerged as a closer. He recorded 36 saves in 1989, earned his only National League All-Star selection, and helped Chicago capture the NL East championship. His aggressive delivery, high-velocity fastball and unpredictable pitching style helped make Wild Thing one of the eras most distinctive relievers.

Williams later became a central figure with the Philadelphia Phillies. In 1993, he saved 43 games as Philadelphia won the National League pennant and advanced to the World Series. He finished his 11-year Major League career with 192 saves and 660 appearances, pitching for the Rangers, Cubs, Phillies, Astros, Angels and Royals.
