LaValliere reached the Major Leagues with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1984 and spent the 1986 season with the St. Louis Cardinals, appearing in 110 games as their primary catcher. He was traded to Pittsburgh before the 1987 season and soon established himself as one of the National League's better defensive catchers.

In 1987, LaValliere earned the National League Gold Glove Award behind the plate. Nicknamed Spanky, he became a familiar part of the Pirates teams that captured three consecutive National League East championships from 1990 through 1992, handling a pitching staff that helped Pittsburgh become a perennial contender.

LaValliere joined the Chicago White Sox during the 1993 season and appeared in 45 games as Chicago captured the American League West championship. He returned to the White Sox in 1994, making this Topps issue representative of the final club of his Major League career.
