A native of the Dominican Republic, Duncan made his Major League debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1985. His speed, defensive versatility and timely hitting helped him establish himself as a valuable middle infielder. He was a member of the 1988 Dodgers World Series championship team and later helped the Cincinnati Reds capture another championship in 1990.

Duncan joined the Philadelphia Phillies in 1993 and contributed to their National League pennant-winning season before eventually signing with the New York Yankees for 1996. He enjoyed one of the finest offensive seasons of his career, batting .340 with 112 hits in 109 games, providing an important contribution to New York's championship lineup.

He also became a memorable clubhouse personality on the 1996 Yankees, popularizing the rallying expression, "We play today, we win today, das it!" The Yankees went on to defeat the Atlanta Braves in six games, capturing their first World Series title since 1978.

Over 12 Major League seasons, Duncan collected more than 1,200 hits and earned three World Series championship rings with the Dodgers, Reds and Yankees. With its distinctive Gold Medallion treatment, the 1997 Fleer Ultra Gold Medallion #433 is an appealing addition for New York Yankees collectors, Mariano Duncan fans, 1996 World Series championship collections, Fleer Ultra parallel collectors or collectors assembling comprehensive autographed player runs.
