The 1989 Upper Deck #31 Kevin Gross features the Philadelphia Phillies right-hander in one of the most important baseball card releases of the modern hobby era. Personally autographed by Gross, the card combines a Phillies pitcher from the 1980s with the landmark inaugural-year Upper Deck set.

Upper Deck entered the baseball card market in 1989 with a premium product that helped change expectations for modern trading cards. The set became known for its high-quality photography, glossy card stock and hologram security feature, making first-year Upper Deck cards popular with collectors decades later.

Gross was an established member of the Philadelphia Phillies starting rotation when this card was issued. He made his Major League debut with Philadelphia in 1983 and spent six seasons with the Phillies, developing into a durable starter and earning an All-Star selection in 1988, his final season with the club.

That 1988 campaign was one of the strongest of Gross's Phillies career. He made 33 starts, worked 202 innings and recorded 121 strikeouts. His performance earned him his only career All-Star selection and provided the statistics represented on this 1989 Upper Deck issue.

Gross had actually moved to the Montreal Expos for the 1989 season, making #31 an interesting transition-year card that still depicts him as a Philadelphia Phillie. He later pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs during a lengthy Major League career.

One of Gross's greatest career accomplishments came on August 17, 1992, when he threw a no-hitter for the Dodgers against the San Francisco Giants. Gross allowed only two walks while striking out six in a 2-0 Los Angeles victory.

Gross pitched 15 Major League seasons from 1983 through 1997, finishing with 142 victories, 1,727 strikeouts and more than 2,500 innings pitched. His career included an All-Star selection, a no-hitter and extended stretches as a dependable Major League starting pitcher.
