Produced as a 42-card mail-order and hobby shop exclusive, the set featured many of baseball's biggest stars in a premium full-color design that stood apart from the regular 1989 Score issue.

Julio Franco enjoyed an extraordinary 23-year Major League career, playing for the Philadelphia Phillies, Cleveland Indians, Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, Atlanta Braves, New York Mets, and Kansas City Royals. A three-time All-Star, five-time Silver Slugger Award winner, and American League batting champion, Franco collected 2,586 career hits, 173 home runs, 1,194 RBIs, and finished with a .298 career batting average.

Franco enjoyed some of the finest seasons of his career with the Texas Rangers, where he developed into one of the American League's premier hitters. In 1989, he captured the American League batting title with a .339 average, while adding 14 home runs, 90 RBIs, and 22 stolen bases. His all-around offensive production earned him a Silver Slugger Award and established him as one of baseball's most consistent hitters.
