The 1989 Topps Ames 20/20 Club was a special 33-card boxed set produced by Topps and distributed through Ames department stores. The glossy, standard-size cards feature a plaque-style design with gold and silver trim and were devoted specifically to active players who had recorded at least one season with 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases.

Samuel was an ideal choice for the set. His electrifying combination of power and speed made him one of Philadelphia's most dynamic players of the 1980s. He earned his place in the 20/20 Club during his outstanding 1987 season, when he hit 28 home runs and stole 35 bases while also leading the National League with 15 triples.
