Samuel remained a dangerous offensive weapon for Philadelphia throughout the decade. In 1988, he collected 36 doubles, 12 home runs, and 33 stolen bases, continuing to display the extra-base ability and speed that made him one of the era's most exciting middle infielders.

A three-time MLB All-Star, Samuel enjoyed a 16-year Major League career and finished with 1,578 hits, 161 home runs, 396 stolen bases, and 102 triples. He later returned to the Phillies organization as a coach, continuing his long association with Philadelphia well beyond his playing career.
