Add an early-career card of Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Juan Nieves with this Juan Nieves autographed 1986 Fleer Update #U-83 Milwaukee Brewers card. Issued during his rookie season, the Fleer Update #U-83 captures Nieves at the beginning of a brief but memorable Major League career highlighted by one of the most significant pitching performances in Brewers history.
Nieves made his Major League debut with Milwaukee on April 10, 1986 and quickly became a regular member of the Brewers rotation. The 21-year-old made 35 appearances, including 33 starts, and finished his rookie campaign with 11 victories and 160 strikeouts in 190.2 innings.
His defining moment came the following season. On April 15, 1987, Nieves threw a 7-0 no-hitter against the Baltimore Orioles at Memorial Stadium, becoming the first pitcher in Milwaukee Brewers history to throw a no-hitter. The performance also made him the first Puerto Rican-born pitcher to throw a no-hitter in Major League Baseball.
Nieves spent his entire three-year Major League career with Milwaukee, winning 32 games and recording 352 strikeouts before arm problems brought his playing career to an early end. He later built a lengthy career in professional baseball as a pitching coach, including serving as the Boston Red Sox pitching coach.
With its rookie-season connection and Nieves permanent place in Brewers history, the 1986 Fleer Update #U-83 is an excellent addition for Milwaukee Brewers collectors, Juan Nieves fans, no-hitter collections or collectors assembling comprehensive autographed player runs.
