Add one of the most recognizable cards from the landmark inaugural Upper Deck release with this 1989 Upper Deck #371 Jose Canseco card featuring him with the Oakland Athletics, personally autographed by the former American League MVP and one of baseball's defining power hitters of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The 1989 Upper Deck set changed the baseball card hobby with premium photography, high-quality card stock and anti-counterfeiting holograms. While Ken Griffey Jr.'s famous #1 rookie card headlines the set, Canseco was one of baseball's biggest stars when the product debuted, making his #371 an excellent signed example from this historic release.
The timing of the card is particularly significant. Canseco was coming directly off his extraordinary 1988 American League MVP season, when he batted .307 with 187 hits, 120 runs, 42 home runs and 124 RBI. Most importantly, he stole 40 bases, becoming the first player in Major League history to record 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in the same season.
Canseco's 1988 performance earned him the American League Most Valuable Player Award, an All-Star selection and a Silver Slugger Award while helping Oakland win 104 games and reach the World Series. His combination of power and speed made him one of the game's biggest attractions.
Injuries limited Canseco to only 65 regular-season games in 1989, but he remained extremely productive when healthy, hitting 17 home runs with 57 RBI and an .875 OPS. He returned for the postseason and batted .323 with a .447 on-base percentage, two home runs and six RBI in nine games.
Canseco and the Athletics ultimately swept the San Francisco Giants in the 1989 World Series. Canseco hit .357 with a home run and a .500 on-base percentage during the four-game series, earning the first World Series championship of his career.
