Joey Cora Autographed 1987 Donruss Opening Day #147 San Diego Padres Card
Featuring Joey Cora with the San Diego Padres, this Joey Cora autographed 1987 Donruss Opening Day #147 San Diego Padres card comes from the inaugural Donruss Opening Day set. The card is an especially early Major League issue of the future All-Star second baseman, dating to the beginning of his career with San Diego.
The Padres selected Cora in the first round of the 1985 MLB Draft, and he reached the Major Leagues in 1987. The switch-hitting infielder appeared in 47 games during his rookie season, beginning a Major League career that would eventually span 11 seasons.
Cora found his greatest sustained success after joining the Chicago White Sox in 1991. In 1993, he collected 152 hits and helped Chicago capture the American League West championship. He started at second base throughout the White Sox's six-game ALCS against the Toronto Blue Jays.
After signing with Seattle, Cora enjoyed the finest offensive season of his career in 1997, batting .300 with 166 hits, 40 doubles and 11 home runs while earning his only American League All-Star selection. He helped the Mariners win the AL West that season and became a popular member of Seattle's successful clubs of the mid-1990s.
The 1987 Donruss Opening Day #147 is an appealing early-career issue for Padres collectors, Joey Cora fans, rookie-era collections, Donruss Opening Day set collectors or collectors assembling comprehensive autographed player runs.
