His first year with the Phillies was arguably even more impressive. During the 1989 season, Parrett appeared in a career-high 72 games, compiling a 12-6 record with a 2.98 ERA and six saves. He worked an exceptional 105 innings out of the bullpen, allowing only 90 hits while striking out 98 batters. His 98 strikeouts were the highest single-season total of his Major League career.

Parrett's workload illustrates how differently relief pitchers were sometimes utilized during the era. Despite making no starts, he surpassed 100 innings and averaged nearly 1 innings per appearance. His 72 appearances tied Randy Ready for the most games played by any member of the 1989 Phillies.
