Templeton was San Diegos regular shortstop in 1985, appearing in 148 games and providing the Padres with an experienced presence in the middle of the infield. By that point, he was already established as one of his eras most accomplished shortstops, combining speed, defensive ability and exceptional hitting during his prime.

Templeton began his Major League career with the St. Louis Cardinals and became a star almost immediately. He earned three All-Star selections during his career and led the National League in triples three consecutive seasons from 1977 through 1979. In 1979, he collected a career-high 211 hits and batted .314, becoming the first player in Major League history to record at least 100 hits from each side of the plate in the same season.

Acquired by San Diego in the blockbuster 1982 trade that sent Ozzie Smith to St. Louis, Templeton became a fixture at shortstop for the Padres. He was named Most Valuable Player of the 1984 National League Championship Series after helping San Diego defeat the Chicago Cubs and advance to the first World Series in franchise history.

Templeton played 16 Major League seasons and finished his career with 2,096 hits, 329 doubles and 242 stolen bases.
