Garry Maddox enjoyed a distinguished 15-year Major League career with the San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies. Widely regarded as one of the finest defensive center fielders in baseball history, Maddox won eight consecutive Gold Glove Awards (19751982), was a member of the 1980 World Series Champion Philadelphia Phillies, and finished his career with a .285 batting average, 2,039 hits, 117 home runs, and 248 stolen bases. He was later inducted into the Philadelphia Phillies Wall of Fame and received the 1986 Roberto Clemente Award for his outstanding community service.

The 1980 season was one of the finest of Maddox's career. He helped lead the Phillies to the first World Series championship in franchise history, providing Gold Glove-caliber defense in center field while batting .284 with 11 home runs, 84 RBIs, and 24 stolen bases. His clutch double in Game 5 of the 1980 National League Championship Series helped send Philadelphia to the World Series, cementing his place in Phillies history.
