Ruthven was part of the Chicago pitching staff in 1985, his third season with the Cubs after being acquired from Philadelphia in 1983. The previous year, he contributed to the 1984 NL East champion Cubs, a club that won 96 games and returned Chicago to postseason baseball for the first time since 1945.

The right-hander enjoyed some of his greatest success with Philadelphia. Ruthven won a career-high 17 games in 1980, helping the Phillies capture the NL East, National League pennant and the first World Series championship in franchise history. He also earned National League All-Star selections in 1976 and 1981.

Ruthven spent 14 seasons in the Major Leagues with the Phillies, Atlanta Braves and Cubs, finishing his career with 123 victories and more than 1,100 strikeouts. He made more than 300 Major League starts and was a durable member of several competitive Philadelphia pitching staffs during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
