Featuring Dennis Martinez with the Baltimore Orioles, this Dennis Martinez autographed 1982 Donruss #79 Baltimore Orioles card showcases the talented right-handed pitcher during his early years with the organization that launched his remarkable Major League career.

Born in Granada, Nicaragua, Martinez signed with the Baltimore Orioles organization in 1973 and made his Major League debut in 1976. Nicknamed "El Presidente," he became the first Nicaraguan-born player to reach the Major Leagues, paving the way for future generations of baseball players from his home country.

Martinez established himself as a dependable member of Baltimore's starting rotation during the late 1970s. In 1978, he enjoyed a breakthrough season, recording 16 victories while helping the Orioles remain among the American League's strongest clubs.

His finest season during his first stint with Baltimore came in 1981, when he led the American League with 14 victories during the strike-shortened campaign. His performance helped establish him as one of the Orioles' most reliable starting pitchers and provides an important historical connection to this 1982 Donruss issue.

Martinez remained with Baltimore through part of the 1986 season before joining the Montreal Expos, where he experienced a remarkable resurgence. On July 28, 1991, he pitched a perfect game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, retiring all 27 batters in a 2-0 victory. He became the first Latin American-born pitcher to throw a perfect game in Major League history.

That same season, Martinez led the National League with a 2.39 ERA and earned the first of his four career All-Star selections. He continued pitching successfully into the 1990s with Montreal, Cleveland and Atlanta.

Over 23 Major League seasons, Martinez compiled 245 victories, 2,149 strikeouts and 3,999 innings pitched, establishing himself as one of the most accomplished pitchers in baseball history from Latin America.
