Add a signature from one of baseball's greatest relief pitchers and a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame with this Dennis Eckersley autographed 1995 Fleer Diamond Tribute #5 Oakland Athletics baseball card, available from Under the Radar Sports Promotions.
Dennis Eckersley enjoyed an extraordinary 24-season Major League career from 1975 through 1998, pitching for the Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, and St. Louis Cardinals. Nicknamed "Eck," he became one of the most recognizable pitchers in baseball history, achieving success as both a starting pitcher and one of the game's most dominant closers.
Eckersley began his Major League career with Cleveland in 1975 and quickly established himself as a talented young starter. On May 30, 1977, he pitched a no-hitter against the California Angels. He later enjoyed success with the Boston Red Sox, winning 20 games in 1978 and earning recognition as one of the American League's top starting pitchers.
His career took a historic turn after joining the Oakland Athletics in 1987. Under manager Tony La Russa, Eckersley developed into a dominant closer, helping redefine the modern ninth-inning relief role. His exceptional control, pinpoint accuracy, and ability to overpower opposing hitters made him one of the most feared pitchers in the American League.
Eckersley played a central role in Oakland's run of three consecutive American League pennants from 1988 through 1990, including the Athletics' 1989 World Series championship over the San Francisco Giants. He earned American League Championship Series MVP honors in 1988 and became a fixture at the back of Oakland's bullpen.
His greatest individual season came in 1992, when he recorded 51 saves with a 1.91 ERA, earning both the American League Cy Young Award and American League Most Valuable Player Award. That remarkable achievement made him one of the few relief pitchers in baseball history to capture both honors in the same season.
Over his career, Eckersley earned six All-Star selections, recorded 390 saves, and accumulated 197 victories and 2,401 strikeouts. His accomplishments earned him induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004.
The 1995 Fleer Diamond Tribute #5 card celebrates Eckersley's accomplishments as one of baseball's premier pitchers. Part of the Diamond Tribute insert series, the card offers a distinctive alternative to traditional base-set cards and highlights an established Oakland Athletics star whose achievements had already secured his place among the game's elite.
