Martinez made his Major League debut with the Chicago Cubs in 1986 after being selected by the organization in the third round of the 1983 MLB Draft. He established himself in the majors during 1987, appearing in 142 games and collecting 126 hits, 22 doubles, eight home runs, 39 RBI and 23 stolen bases.
A versatile outfielder with speed and a consistent bat, Martinez went on to play 16 Major League seasons. He later built an extensive coaching career, including serving as Joe Maddons bench coach with the Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago Cubs. Martinez was part of the Cubs coaching staff when the franchise captured its historic 2016 World Series championship.
Martinez later became manager of the Washington Nationals and guided the club to the 2019 World Series championship, the first title in Nationals history.
