Lefferts joined the San Diego Padres for the 1984 season and immediately became an important member of the bullpen. He appeared in 54 games, posted a 2.13 ERA and recorded 10 saves as San Diego won the National League West and captured the first National League pennant in franchise history.

During the 1984 postseason, Lefferts pitched in both the National League Championship Series against the Chicago Cubs and the World Series against the Detroit Tigers. He earned the victory in the decisive Game 5 of the NLCS, working two scoreless innings as the Padres completed their comeback from a two-games-to-none deficit and advanced to the World Series.

Lefferts remained one of San Diegos busiest relievers over the following seasons. In 1985, he appeared in 73 games and recorded seven saves, then worked another 68 games for the Padres in 1986. Following the 1986 season, he was traded to the San Francisco Giants in a multi-player deal that brought Kevin Mitchell to San Diego.

Lefferts eventually returned to the Padres and completed a 12-season Major League career that included more than 600 pitching appearances and 100 saves. He pitched for the Cubs, Padres, Giants, Orioles, Rangers and Angels while filling roles ranging from closer and setup reliever to starting pitcher.
