The veteran left-hander proved to be a dependable member of New Yorks bullpen, appearing in 62 games and finishing 3-2 with a 2.86 ERA and one save across 63 innings. He helped the Yankees capture the American League pennant and advance to the 2003 World Series.
Following the season, New York traded Hammond and cash to the Oakland Athletics on December 18, 2003, in exchange for Eduardo Sierra and minor-league infielder J.T. Stotts. As a result, this 2004 Topps card serves as one of Hammonds final mainstream issues depicting him as a Yankee.
