Featuring longtime Houston Astros left-hander Bob Knepper, this Bob Knepper autographed 1989 Upper Deck #422 Houston Astros card comes from Upper Decks landmark inaugural baseball release. The 1989 Upper Deck set helped usher in a new era of baseball cards with sharp photography, premium card stock and hologram technology.
Knepper was a fixture in the Houston rotation throughout much of the 1980s. One of his finest seasons came in 1986, when he went 17-12 with a 3.14 ERA, threw five shutouts and worked 258.1 innings. His performance earned him his second career National League All-Star selection and helped the Astros capture the NL West championship.
The left-hander also played a major role in Houstons memorable 1986 National League Championship Series against the New York Mets. Knepper started twice in the series and was particularly impressive in Game 3, allowing just one run over seven innings. He returned for Game 6 and carried a shutout into the ninth inning before the Mets rallied in what became a 16-inning classic.
Originally developed by the San Francisco Giants, Knepper spent parts of 15 seasons in the Major Leagues and was a two-time All-Star. He recorded 146 career victories, 1,473 strikeouts, 77 complete games and 30 shutouts, with the majority of his career spent in an Astros uniform.
Combining a longtime Houston pitcher with Upper Decks historic debut set, the 1989 Upper Deck #422 is an appealing addition for Astros collectors, Bob Knepper fans, 1989 Upper Deck set collectors or collectors assembling comprehensive autographed player runs.
