Chicago won the National League East championship and reached the postseason for the first time since 1945.

Together with Sandberg at the top of the batting order, Dernier formed the popular Daily Double, a combination that became closely associated with the Cubs breakthrough season.

Dernier played 10 seasons in the Major Leagues with the Phillies and Cubs, stealing 218 bases and establishing himself as a talented defensive outfielder and baserunning threat. He spent six seasons in Chicago before returning to Philadelphia to finish his playing career.
