Caudill arrived in Toronto after establishing himself as one of the American Leagues top closers with the Oakland Athletics. In 1984, he recorded 36 saves, earned the only All-Star selection of his career and finished among the leagues leading relief pitchers. His success prompted Toronto to acquire him to strengthen its bullpen for the 1985 season.

During his first year with the Blue Jays, Caudill appeared in 67 games and finished 4-6 with a 2.99 ERA and 14 saves over 69.1 innings. He allowed only 53 hits while helping Toronto win 99 games and capture the 1985 American League East championship, the first division title and postseason appearance in franchise history.

Caudill finished his Major League career with 106 saves and 620 strikeouts in 445 appearances, pitching for the Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners, Oakland Athletics and Toronto Blue Jays.
