Garbey made his Major League debut with Detroit on April 3, 1984 and quickly found a role on a Tigers club that opened the season 35-5 and ultimately won 104 games. Playing throughout the lineup, Garbey appeared in 110 games and batted .287 with 94 hits, 17 doubles, five home runs and 52 RBI during his rookie campaign. His performance earned him Tigers Rookie of the Year honors.

Garbey also contributed during Detroits championship postseason, appearing in seven games as the Tigers defeated the Kansas City Royals in the American League Championship Series and the San Diego Padres in the World Series. His place on the 1984 World Series championship team gives his autographed cards lasting appeal among Detroit collectors.

He returned to Detroit in 1985 and appeared in 86 games, batting .257 with six home runs and 29 RBI while continuing to fill several roles defensively.
