His steady defense and leadership made him a respected veteran throughout his playing career.

Following his playing days, Howe enjoyed tremendous success as a Major League manager, guiding the Oakland Athletics to three consecutive American League West Division titles (20002002). He was named American League Manager of the Year in 2002 after leading Oakland to a franchise-record 103 victories.
