Howe spent nine seasons with the Houston Astros, becoming a dependable fixture in their infield during one of the franchise's most competitive eras. He helped Houston capture the 1980 National League West Division championship, earning a trip to the memorable 1980 National League Championship Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. His steady defense and leadership made him a respected veteran throughout his playing career.
Following his playing days, Howe enjoyed tremendous success as a Major League manager, guiding the Oakland Athletics to three consecutive American League West Division titles (20002002). He was named American League Manager of the Year in 2002 after leading Oakland to a franchise-record 103 victories.
